About Tobago
Tobago alone with it's sister isle Trinidad, split from Venezuela about 11,000 years ago resulting in a diverse environment unique from the Caribbean.The island contains many idyllic, easily accessible beaches, excellent coral reefs and the oldest protected rainforest in the western hemisphere also known as the main Ridge Forest Reserve; it is unique in the Caribbean for two reasons. Firstly, it once was connected to South America and therefore has many of the flora and fauna of the mainland.
Secondly, it has been legally protected since 1776 making it the oldest protected forest reserve in the western world.
The most developed region of Tobago is the lowlands in the southwest,the location of the majority of the island's tourism industry .Tobago has many beautiful waterfalls and underdeveloped country sites perfect for hiking, sightseeing and bird watching .Tobago is the home to 210 species of birds, 3 species of endangered sea turtles and over 80 species are found nowhere else but in Tobago. The best dive sites are located in the northeast.
The climate consists of temperatures from 22 °C /71 °F at night to 32 °/89 °F during the day, even though the humidity is high Tobago benefits for sea breezes reducing the effects of the humidity.

Tobago is also home to world renown annual Jazz Festival which take place in April.
In October 2003, World Travel Awards in New York City selected Tobago as being home to the Best Eco-Destination in the world, in November of the same year the island was honored again, this time by the Caribbean Travel Awards Committee in London, as "The # 1 Eco-Destination in the Caribbean". In 2004 the Caribbean Travel Awards announced Tobago " Best Island of the year" and the 2004 winners for The best Eco Resort, the best luxury resort located on the island.
Economy
Tobago was an agricultural economy historically growing cocoa, sugar and coffee. In the last 20 years however there was an increase in the tourism industry with government encouragement. A change in the law enabling foreigners to purchase land has also seen an increase in the construction industry as newcomers using local labor and materials.

Culture
Tobago is a small island community that is more relaxed than its sisterisle, hence the saying, "Trinidad is nice, Tobago is paradise".Though increasingly affected by the growing tourist trade, the country has maintained strong cultural traditions related to african past of its residents.Tobago's culture has retained a purity not seen elsewhere in the Caribbean.
Events to look out for are are the excellent Heritage Festival in August, the entertaining goat and crab race at Easter and harvest meals that take place on most Sundays around the island.The island is famous for its excellent"Blue Food", made from ground provisions, such as cassava and dasheen. One meal that is a unique island treat is the delectable "crab and dumplins" cooked in coconut milk.

Government
Tobago is a ward of Trinidad and therefore most of the political decisions are made in Trinidad. However Tobago has it own House of Assembly ( THA ), which has limited powers to deal with the islands domestic matters. It has 15 members who serve a 4 year - term.
